Frequently asked questions
MetroCard still usable or must use OMNY now?
From early 2026, MetroCards will no longer be sold or refilled, with the system fully switching to OMNY. Simply tap a contactless credit or debit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or a physical OMNY card at the turnstile. The fare per trip is around 3 dollars. Use the same card consistently to automatically benefit from the weekly fare cap.
Is tipping in New York really mandatory, and how much should you give?
Practically yes, as service staff earn very low base wages and rely on tips. The standard is 18–20% at full-service restaurants, 1–2 dollars per drink at bars, and about 15% for taxis. Counter service or self-service spots don’t require tipping. Always check if gratuity is already included in the bill.
What’s the minimum number of days to explore New York without feeling rushed?
Four to five full days is ideal for core Manhattan, plus a day in Brooklyn and one major museum. Stick to one theme per day and limit yourself to two large areas daily—moving between boroughs can take an hour. Seven days allows for Queens, Bronx Zoo, or a day trip.
How can you cut costs in this very expensive city?
Stay in Long Island City, Jersey City, or Brooklyn near a subway line to slash hotel costs by a third. Lunch on pizza slices, bagels, or food hall bites; stock up at Trader Joe’s for breakfast. Take advantage of free attractions like the Staten Island Ferry, High Line, Central Park, and pay-what-you-wish entry at some museums.
Is the subway safe to use at night?
Generally yes, and it remains the fastest way to get around, but stay alert as you would in any big city. Wait in well-lit platform areas near the station booth, choose cars with other passengers, and keep your phone out of sight when doors open. After midnight, service frequency drops, so Uber or Lyft often make more sense.
Is it easy to find halal food in New York?
Very easy—it’s one of the most halal-friendly cities in the US. Halal food carts are on nearly every Midtown corner, and you’ll find clusters of restaurants in Jackson Heights, Bay Ridge, and Brooklyn’s Little Pakistan. Look for the zabiha label to confirm. Major mosques like the Islamic Cultural Center on the Upper East Side also hold regular prayer sessions.
