Frequently asked questions
Is a one-day transit at Changi enough to explore the city?
Yes, if your layover is at least eight hours and you clear immigration. The MRT from Changi to Marina Bay takes about 45 minutes, so you can realistically do one route: Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay Sands, then a hawker meal in Chinatown. Leave three hours before boarding and stow your luggage in terminal baggage storage.
Is halal food widely available in Singapore?
Yes, and it’s easy to spot. Hawker centres have certified halal stalls marked with the clear MUIS logo, and Kampong Glam around Sultan Mosque is packed with Malay, Indian Muslim, and Middle Eastern restaurants. Geylang Serai also offers plenty of local options. In mixed food courts, watch for separate utensils and avoid stalls selling pork.
Do I need an EZ-Link card or is a bank card enough?
For tourists, simply tap a contactless debit or credit card, or Apple/Google Pay via SimplyGo. Fares match EZ-Link with no card deposit. Only buy a physical EZ-Link if your card charges foreign transaction fees. Always tap in and out, including on buses.
Is Singapore too expensive for backpackers?
Accommodation is pricey, but food and transport are cheap. A plate of chicken rice at a hawker costs around SGD 5–7, and MRT rides rarely exceed SGD 2. The big expenses are hotels, alcohol, and attraction tickets. Combine a hostel in Lavender or Geylang with hawker meals, and enjoy many free park attractions.
How many days are enough for Singapore?
Three to four days is comfortable. Spend one day on Marina Bay and Gardens, one day on a heritage walk through Chinatown, Kampong Glam, and Little India, one day at Sentosa or Universal Studios, plus a spare day for the Botanic Gardens or a museum. If travelling with kids, add an extra day—pace will slow.
What items are completely banned from entry?
Selling chewing gum, vapes and all e-cigarette devices, undeclared cigarettes, and e-cigarettes are strictly prohibited with heavy fines. Vapes are confiscated during inspections. Even conventional cigarettes have no duty-free allowance—you must declare them on arrival. Drug laws are extremely severe with no exceptions for tourists.
